WCRP/ WMO (WWRP-THORPEX)
Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC):
Planning Meeting
November 13-14, 2007
Arlington Court Hotel, Arlington, VA
BACKGROUND: The realistic representation
of tropical convection and its multiscale organization in global
atmospheric models continues to limit the success of our numerical
weather forecasts and global climate predictions. Progress in this
long-standing weather-climate prediction issue requires addressing
fundamental research issues and a need to establish strong collaborations
between the operational prediction, national research laboratory
and academic communities. In order to address this grand science
challenge, WCRP and WWRP/THORPEX have proposed a Year of coordinated
observing, modeling and forecasting of organized tropical convection
and its influences on predictability. This effort is intended to
exploit the vast amounts of existing and emerging observations
and computational resources in conjunction with the development
of new, high-resolution modeling frameworks, with the objective
of advancing the characterization, diagnosis, modeling and prediction
of multi-scale convective/dynamic interactions and processes, including
the two-way interaction between tropical and extra-tropical weather/climate.
This activity and its ultimate success will be based on the coordination
of ongoing and planned international programmatic activities. An
outcome of the 2007 WWRP and WCRP JSC meetings was the establishment
of and support for a planning group and meeting to facilitate progress
in this key area.
OBJECTIVES: The two main objectives of the planning meeting
are: i) Completion of the YOTC Science Plan from drafts prepared
and circulated prior to the meeting with input from the planning
group at large; ii) input to and construction of the YOTC Implementation
Plan aimed at a 3-year inaugural term (YOTC Phase I) as a proof
of the YOTC concept.
