Martin Hoerling (NOAA-CDC/Boulder)
Mark Serreze (Univ of Colorado/CIRES)
Mike Mccartney (WHOI)
John Chiang (Univ Washington/JISAO)
Ed Cook (Columbia Univ/LDEO/Tree-Ring Lab)

Arrangements:
David Legler
, US CLIVAR Office, 202-314-2237
Melanie Whitmire (whitmire@ucar.edu), UCAR, Joint Office for Science Support (JOSS) P.O. Box 3000, Boulder, CO 80307 tel: 303-497-8687; fax: 303-497-8633.

GOALS:
The goals of this open meeting will be to give the scientific community an opportunity to present and discuss current Atlantic climate research relevant to the U.S. CLIVAR program. Also, there will be opportunities for collecting/preparing national input for an International CLIVAR Tropical Atlantic meeting (Sep 2001, Paris, http://www.clivar.org/organization/atlantic/TAV/) aimed at coordinating future observational and modeling plans in the formulation of a sustained tropical Atlantic observing system in support of a developing international CLIVAR implementation plan.

INVITATION
This is an open meeting and we are looking for contributions of oral and poster presentations from CLIVAR Atlantic program PIs, WOCE ACCP/ACCE investigators, and others actively involved in Atlantic basin climate research.

FOCI
This is an open meeting where abstracts on all relevant CLIVAR Atlantic topics are encouraged, and time during the meeting allocated for their presentation. There will be several scientific foci that will receive special attention during this meeting:
-----------------
Tropical Atlantic variability (TAV) and its interaction with mid-latitude (north and south) variability, e.g. NAO, MOC; as well as TAV interactions with ENSO and neighboring land regions (S. America and Africa). We would like to develop a US perspective in preparation for the fall International TAV meeting. Contributions in the following areas are especially encouraged:
a. Phenomenological Studies of TAV
b. Predictability of TAV
c. Predictability Originating from TAV

A set of presentations of progress within ACCP/ACCE elements. The question to be addressed...what parts of ACCE would address CLIVAR objectives? Summary presentations by a few leads charged with pulling together information would be preferred.

Paleo-climate issues and Atlantic variability (need for longer records, encourage interaction between modelers and paleo/historical data investigators):
a. Detecting and Understanding Change in Atlantic Climate (~150 yr observational
record as well as paleo record from the most recent 500-years)
b. Indications of Anthropogenic Forcing of Atlantic Climate Change

Other contributed efforts to Atlantic CLIVAR are welcomed for an open session on relevant topics of interest to the U.S. CLIVAR Atlantic program (see http://www.usclivar.org/Pubs/US_CLIVAR_IP.PDF and http://www.usclivar.org/Pubs/ATLANTIC_IMPL_DEC00.PDF).
