The U.S. Contribution to

Climate Variability and Predictability

U.S. CLIVAR Pan American Workshop

EPIC2001 Workshop
There will be an EPIC 2001 workshop prior to (i.e. Sept 15-16) the Pan American workshop. Pan American CLIVAR investigators are invited to attend the EPIC workshop. Note that a joint session with the EPIC 2001 workshop will be held on Sept 16, 2003.
Abstracts on all aspects of the EPIC2001 project are encouraged, but an emphasis will be placed on addressing the question originally giving rise to EPIC, namely, what have we learned which will improve our understanding and modeling of the east Pacific coupled ocean-atmosphere system.

Poster Abstracts

Workshop Goals:

(1) To review U.S. CLIVAR Pan American achievements (especially those of the NOAA PACS Program) over the past three years;
(2) To give the broad Pan American research community an opportunity to present and discuss relevant current climate research issues;
(3) To discuss how best to incorporate and utilize new observations from Pan Am/PACS process studies (EPIC, SALLJEX, NAME) to improve climate models and climate prediction; and
(4) To receive feedback on U.S. CLIVAR Pan American research plans for the next five years.

We invite contributions from all investigators contributing to the U.S. CLIVAR Pan American research focus, most specifically NOAA PACS Pis (note that PIs funded jointly by NOAA PACS/GAPP who are attending the GAPP PI meeting in July are not required to attend this workshop but your participation is still greatly encouraged. We anticipate that future PACS and GAPP science meetings will be held jointly.)

Themes and Workshop Format
The workshop will include invited overview talks, dedicated discussion sessions, as well as ample time for poster viewing. Poster presentations will be the primary means of presenting research results. Posters are welcomed on current and recent research on any topic relevant to Pan American CLIVAR – see http://www.usclivar.org/Pubs/PanAm_Plan_2002.pdf for a full description of its objectives), but especially encouraged in each of the following four subject areas

1. Eastern Pacific Climate and the Cold Tongue/ITCZ Complex (jointly organized with the EPIC Science Working Group meeting)
2. Monsoon circulations of the Americas
3. Ocean/Continent climate linkages
4. Pan American Region observing system
5. Climate prediction, especially on time scales of seasons and longer

Abstract Submission
Participants are invited to make poster presentations at the workshop. Abstracts should be submitted by August 8, 2003 as one-page PDF files. Please follow the specific format described in this template. Contributors should post their abstracts to the workshop abstract site (http://www.joss.ucar.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/CLIVARPanAmerican)

Poster Specifications
Posters should be no larger than 48x48 inches (122 x 122cm). Posters will remain up during the entire workshop. Pins will be provided.

We would like to provide access to electronic versions (e.g. PDF files) of the posters via the workshop web site. Please submit your posters to the workshop TWIKI page;
(http://www.joss.ucar.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/CLIVARPanAmerican)
Jill Reisdorf (reisdorf@ucar.edu) can answer questions on this process.

Workshop Equipment/Presentation Formats
An LCD and overhead projectors will be available.

For those making electronic (e.g. Powerpoint) presentations, please bring your presentation loaded on your laptop or on a USB device or a CD-ROM. It would be helpful to email your presentation to Jill Reisdorf (reisdorf@ucar.edu) in advance as a backup. Copies of the presentations will be collected at the workshop and posted on the workshop web site.

Workshop Registration
Attendees should register for the workshop through online registration [http://orc.joss.ucar.edu/joss_psg/clivar_panam_newreg.htm]. A registration fee of $15 will be assessed to cover workshop costs. The fee will be collected when attendees register at the workshop: cash or personal check only (no credit cards).

Schedule/Agenda
Details will be provided at a later date.
